The Distance education department was started in September 2004 as a response to the acute need for multi-competent specialists to meet the huge demand in the health sector. This was spear-headed by Dr. Vinod Shah who established the Distance education Unit and launched a “Refer Less, Resolve More” initiative in the form of a 2 year Post Graduate Diploma in Family Medicine (PGDFM). Eleven secondary level hospitals across the country functioning as contact centers under the supervision of national and international Family Medicine faculty form the pillars of this program. This program has been upgraded to the Master in Medicine (M.Med.) in Family Medicine affiliated to the Tamilnadu Dr. MGR Medical University, since 2013.
The Distance Education unit focuses on capacity building Human Resources for Health (HRH) at all levels of healthcare with a goal to strengthen healthcare delivery systems in India and other developing countries with a special objective to facilitate healthcare access to the poor and marginalised, in the spirit of Christ.
This vision is accomplished by imparting medical education through distance mode by conducting various courses, training programs and workshops for doctors, nurses, community workers, medical students, allied-health professions, medical educators etc. Distance Medical Education uses all the andragogic methods aided by advancing technology and delivers through problem-based self-learning modules, video-lectures, video-conferencing, face-to-face contact programs and innovative teaching-learning methods and has helped in training large numbers without displacing them too much from their work-places and thereby build capacity of Human Resources for Health (HRH) both in India and Developing Countries, with a special focus on proper diagnostic approach to medical problems, rationality of prescriptions and medical ethics.
We deliver our content in a blended learning format combining self-learning modules and face-to-face contact programs. We adopt teaching methods which incorporate adult learning principles through a problem-based, self-learning approach aided by modern education technologies. This methodology has helped in training large numbers without displacing them from their areas of service - bringing education to their doorstep!
